Empowerment Plan Distributes 1,000 EMPWR Sleeping Bag Coats Across United States on World Homeless Day

Funding from the Lucky Duck Foundation will provide coats throughout San Diego to celebrate Project 10

Empowerment Plan (EP) is celebrating its 10th year of impact with Project 10: a nation-wide EMPWR coat distribution set to take place on World Homeless Day, Monday, October 10th, 2022.

EP is teaming up with civic and community organizations in 10 cities across the nation to distribute 1,000 EMPWR sleeping bag coats to unhoused community members. Leading the charge in San Diego is the Lucky Duck Foundation.

Empowerment Plan has worked closely with the Lucky Duck Foundation since 2020 having distributed more than 5,000 coats in that time. And this winter, the Lucky Duck Foundation will distribute several thousand more coats throughout the San Diego region, starting with the first 100 coats on October 10.

“Empowerment Plan is an incredible organization that employs formerly homeless parents to manufacture an amazing sleeping bag coat that provides much-needed warmth and protection for those suffering on the streets,” said Drew Moser, Executive Director of the Lucky Duck Foundation. “We are pleased to distribute these coats to our unsheltered neighbors while we continue to call on elected leaders to add more inclement weather shelter beds throughout the region.”

EP’s founder, Veronika Scott visited Lucky Duck Foundation’s executive director, Drew Moser, in San Diego in 2020. “Over the last two years, EP has experienced unprecedented demand, both for the coats and the services we provide. The coat is a valuable resource for outreach organizations like the Lucky Duck Foundation as they work to meet the ever-changing needs of individuals experiencing or at imminent risk of homelessness in their communities. We are so grateful for the ongoing support and encouragement from the Lucky Duck Foundation and their executive director, Drew Moser. We thank the Lucky Duck Foundation for generously stepping up to help make Project 10 a reality,” shared Veronika.

Empowerment Plan has become a globally recognized organization over the last 10 years, pulling more than 100 families from homelessness in Detroit and producing and distributing 65,000 EMPWR coats across all 50 states and 20 other countries.

Other funders and participating cities include DTE Foundation (Muskegon, MI), the Detroit Pistons (Detroit, MI), the New England Patriots (Boston, MA), the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation (NYC, NY), Hello for Good (Spokane, WA), the Lineage Foundation for Good (Chicago, IL, Los Angeles, CA and Atlanta, GA), and the Brothers Trust (location TBD).
